Earthweavers, Auroville
The Earthweavers Office, envisioned as part of an evolving Design Research Centre in Auroville, serves as a workspace for architecture, landscape, interior, furniture, and material research.
The building reflects this multidisciplinary and experimental approach through its construction and material expression. Exposed brickwork laid in lime mortar defines the primary envelope, emphasizing durability and craft while maintaining a low embodied energy approach.A key architectural feature is the use of brick shell roofs—developed through Earthweavers’ own material and structural research. These roofs minimize material consumption while achieving efficient spans, demonstrating a direct translation of research into built form. The result is a workspace that functions not just as an office, but as a live demonstration of alternative construction techniques and structural innovation.
Techniques: Arch foundation with exposed brick masonry in lime mortar, combined with brick shell roofing systems developed through in-house research.
