Arulvarzhi School, Auroville
Arulvarzhi School, a bioregional educational initiative in Auroville, functions as a vocational centre for children from surrounding communities. The multipurpose hall within its campus is designed as a flexible, open space to accommodate a range of extracurricular activities, from gatherings to skill-based workshops.
The architecture prioritizes simplicity, durability, and climatic responsiveness. A load-bearing exposed brick structure defines the envelope, with circular arch lintels introducing both structural efficiency and a softer spatial rhythm. The ferrocement shell roof spans the hall with minimal structural depth, allowing for a column-free interior while enhancing thermal performance.
The result is a robust, low-maintenance space that supports collective use while remaining rooted in context and construction logic.
