Kumar House, Auroville

Located in the Samasti Community of Auroville, Kumar House is a residence designed for a family of four. The form and spatial character draw inspiration from a now-demolished house in the French town of Puducherry, reinterpreting its proportions and architectural language in a contemporary context.

Rather than direct replication, the design abstracts key elements such as balanced massing, rhythmic openings, and shaded transitional spaces, adapting them to the climatic and social needs of the site. Exposed brickwork establishes a warm, grounded material identity, while the interplay of flat and sloping roofs enhances both spatial variation and environmental performance.

Techniques: Exposed brick masonry with flat arch lintels, RBC flat roofs, and RCC-supported sloping roofs finished with Mangalore tiles.
